Chapter 16

Cassie ran an extra loop around the Coastal Walk the next morning, trying to compensate for all the extra carbs she had consumed the previous day. She forced herself to ignore the stack of pancakes Meg was working on when she got home and made herself a green smoothie.

“Say Hello to Charlie for me,” Anna told her.

Charlie Robinson was the owner of the Castle Beach Resort, a premium property that hosted celebrities and wealthy people. He had a tendre for Anna. Julie thought the man was a crook. Anna thought her friend was prejudiced. Julie’s bias came from the Robinson family’s dubious reputation. Charlie’s ancestors had been rum runners and smugglers and he was known to bend the rules when it suited him.

Gino agreed with Julie and warned Anna to stay away from Charlie.

“Sure we will, Mom,” Cassie smiled knowingly. “And we won’t tell Gino anything about it, don’t worry.”

“Gino doesn’t run my life.” Anna was acerbic. “I don’t know where you get these ideas, Cassie.”

“But he doesn’t like Charlie,” Meg pointed out. “Why poke the bear?”

Cassie saw Anna roll her eyes at that.

“I’m gonna grab a shower, Meg. Why don’t I pick you up in an hour?”

“Sounds good, Cassie.” Meg nodded. “Mary will be there by then. She’s going to pitch in and help Anna.”

Cassie dressed in her usual outfit of white shirt and faded blue jeans. She chose a pink paisley Hermes scarf from her collection and wound it around her neck in a stylish knot. Meg was waiting outside the café when Cassie reached Main Street. A few minutes later, they pulled up in the fancy porte cochere of the Castle Beach Resort.

Cassie handed over her keys to a valet and swung her arm through Meg’s. Charlie was talking to some guests in the lobby. He came forward as soon as he spotted Cassie.

“Good Morning, girls! And to what do I owe this pleasure?”

Cassie beamed at Charlie while Meg surprised him with a hug.

“How are you, Uncle Charlie?” Cassie took his hand. “We are here on a mission.”

“That sounds ominous,” Charlie smiled. “But first tell me, have you two had breakfast yet?”

The girls assured him they had eaten well that morning.

“We can have coffee though, can’t we?”

“Of course we can,” Cassie assured him. “And we wouldn’t mind anything the pastry chef rustles up. Right Meg?”

“Aren’t you off sugar, Cassie?” Meg asked precociously.

Charlie told them about the recent renovations at the resort. He insisted on taking them around to a new wing.

“These are for our special guests,” he told Cassie proudly. “People who don’t count their pennies. I would love to get your opinion, Cassie.”

Cassie was impressed by the room she had just entered. It was three times the size of any regular hotel room. All the furniture was gilded. Cassie glanced at the super soft Egyptian cotton sheets and the towels in the bathroom.

“This is amazing! You haven’t spared any expense, Uncle Charlie!”

“How’s your mother?” Charlie asked coyly. “I hear she’s looking into a murder again.”

“You know Mom!” Cassie said airily.
